Mpox (the new name for monkey pox) hasn't been in the news for a while, but now the World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared a global health emergency (their highest level of alert) for mpox, as reported by the BBC. A new variant of the virus, "Clade 1b", is more infectious and more deadly (up to 10% of people infected), and is spreading rapidly in parts of Africa, with more than 13,700 cases of mpox, and at least 450 deaths, in the DR Congo alone. There is obviously concern that it could spread beyond Africa. There is also a risk that even deadlier mutations will appear, in the same way as with Covid-19. |
