This report on the Mirror is about some recent statistics about tourism, which they claim show that Austria is the overcrowded country in Europe "with three tourists to every local". Now, the thing about tourists is that they are short term visitors; Austria is unusual in that a huge proportion of their tourists visit the mountains for skiing or hiking, which means that their visits typically last from 1 day to 1 week. At no time do the tourists outnumber the locals. I have an idea. If journalists such as Tim Hanlon and Esther Marshal, the authors of this piece, do not understand basic statistics, then maybe they shouldn't be allowed to write about them. |
